BANANAS FOR AUCKLAND
DELAY IN SHIPMENT. HEAVY RAIN AT APIA. . TOTAL LOSS FEARED. APIA, January 19. There has been an abnormal rainfall during the last two days in Apia. Approximately 20 inches fell in 24 hours, accompanied by fierce squalls. Considerable damage was done to roads and bridges between Apia and Talefa.
The steamer Waikawa arrived on January 16 to load 4000 cases of bananas for Auckland, but owing to rain and heavy seas running in the harbour the steamer was not able to load.
She went outside on Thursday morning and returned to port last evening when the weather had moderated.
The bananas were packed ready for shipment on Tuesday and it is thought the consignment will be a total loss,’ owing to the fruit ripening and becoming unfit to ship. However, 3930 cases were loaded and the vessel sailed this morning. The weather is now normal.
