The body of Douglas William Ernest Monthey. aged about 33, married, was found hanging from a tent pole at Waiheke Island yesterday, by Con- i stable Solly, of Auckland, who is j temporarily on duty at the island. Many cars that have passed through Whangarei in the past few days have carried little Union Jacks attached to the radiator, an indication that a good many tourists Avaited in Auckland to see the Duke of Gloucester before going on holiday. It is reported that the majority of cars in the city carried these little tokens of loyalty. Hotel Safe Robbed. Detectives are investigating the theft of about £l4O in notes and silver from the safe in the office of. an Auckland hotel early yesterday morning. The safe also contained £BO in £5 notes and cheques, but this was not disturbed by the thief. All the money belonged to the propx’ietor of the hotel, who had placed it in the safe. Whangarei’s Fine RoAving Win. “The maiden fours open drew the biggest field and the finest race for many a day, that gave to Whangarei a win by half a length from Opotiki, with Hamilton No. 1 a canvas further back,” states a correspondent in connection with the rowing etmnts at the Taui’anga regatta. “It is safe to predict that in this class some sterling coxxtests will be seen this season,” he concluded. Tourists’ Inquiries. The opening of the Tourist Bureau outside the Post Office by the Whangarei Twenty Thousand Club and the Chamber of Commerce has relieved the rush of inquiries at the White Top Honorary Government Tourist Bureaxx. It was stated by Mr A. Cope this morning that 75 per cent, of the inquiries which last year went to the White Top Bureau have this year gone to the stand by the Post Office. When the temporary stand is closed, however, the White Top people service tourists.
