As a result of serious head injuries received after being attacked on Christmas Eve, the death has occurred of Wilfred George Farquharson, aged 18, son of Detective Farquharson, of Hastings. Deceased accompanied a girl home after the shop closed on Christmas Eve, assisting her with her parcels. On arrival at the girl’s home, Farquharson was approached from behind and, it is alleged, was dealt a blow while still holding the parcels. He fell and struck his head on the concrete kerbing in his fall, with the result that he received serious injury. Farquharson was taken home in an unconscious condition by a friend in a car. For a brief period only he regained consciousness and died some 24 hours later.
As a sequel, a young man, Maurice James Brooker, appeared in the Police Court yesterday charged with manslaughter. He was remanded until January 16, bail being refused. Farquharson was a very popular and well-known youth.
