LACK FINISH
NEW ZEALAND PRODUCTS
BRITISH MARKETING
[Special to “Northern Advocate.”} DUNEDIN, Wednesday.
Mr E. Oswald Reilly, . a Dunedin merchant, back from the Old Country, said he found that in the marketing of fruit, butter and pretty well evei’ything else, New Zealand exports lack the finish that makes South African, American and Canadian goods apparently superior to ours, and certainly more attractive. He was assured that the look of containers and the-get up of the contents counted for a great deal in the appraisement of buyers, and facts brought to his knowledge led him to accept those statements as true.
It was the same- with New Zealand eggs. When visiting Tooley Street headquarters he. was told plainly that our eggs were not up to the standard of South African and Australian eggs in regard to size, quality or appearance, particularly as to colour of shell, and he had it, on the best authority that in valuing by buyers New Zealand eggs were tabulated as “railenders.”
One of his purposes in going to England, said Mr Reilly, was to look into the possibility of exporting New Zealand poultry. Therein he was disappointed and the conclusion he came to was that until we have a different class of fowls there is no chance of working up the trade. The : breeds mostly in demand in England. are Light Sussex, Dorkings, the Houdan crosses, Buff Orpingtons, and Wyandottes. • It is no use, he says, sending to London fowls of the Black Orpington breed, as they - are out of f avoui because of their having black pin feathers.
Mr Reilly’s view of the matter is that if such trade is to be inaugurated we should breed for it, choosing crosses between our White Leghorns and some others, preferably Light Sussex, which do well in this country. Such crosses would improve the quality of the meat and give the eggs the colour that is fancied.
