CRICKET DISPUTE
MANGONUI PLAYERS DO TRAVEL.
RODNEY STATEMENT RESENTED,
STRONG RESOLUTION PASSED
At the annual meeting of the Mangonui Cricket Association on Tuesday evening, strong exception was taken by several speakers to the remarks made by the Rodney delegate. Mr A. T, Young, at the last meeting of the North Auckland Cricket Association. Mr Young said that Mangonui cricketers would not travel when selected for touring teams. Mr Dawson said the remark was most uncalled for. Two years ago, Mangonui sent three players to a game in Whangarei, while the four Rodney men selected did not put in an appearance. Mangonui had sent players to Auckland to play in the Country Week tournament.
Mr R. H. Kelly said Mr Young had no knowledge of the facts. In a trip to Auckland, Mangonui players had to make a journey of 500 miles, and Rodney players, 80. “I am opposed to the playing of North Auckland matches in Rodney,” said Mr Kelly, “as Rodney is practically a suburb of Auckland, and players from that area can easily play in the Auckland suburban competitions.” Mr Kelly moved that the meeting strongly resent the statement of the Rodney delegate at the annual meeting of the North Auckland Cricket Association, that Mangonui players would not ti'avel in representative matches, the statement being untrue and made without any knowledge of the facts; and in fairness to cricketers in the North, oppose Rodney being the venue of North Auckland matches.
The motion was carried.unanimously,
