GENERAL RIOTING
RHODE ISLAND THROES SHOPS WRECKED AND LOOTED, RED UPRISING REARED. TROOPS IN READINESS. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Received 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 13, The Governor, of Rhode Island, Mr T. F, Green, stated today that an extraordinary session of the State Legislature has been summoned to deal with the present industrial emergency. He said that Rhode Island was faced not with a textile strike, but with a Communist uprising. Mr Green added he had asked for authority to call special troops into the State and for an appropriation of 200,000 dollars with which to enrol 1000 Great War veterans as special State policemen. President Roosevelt had a telephonic conversation with Mr Green today,, and the situation was outlined to the President, who subsequently said he was ready to order Federal troops to intervene at a moment’s notice.
Rioting was general in several Rhode Island towns throughout last night. Woonsocket was particularly affected. One man was killed there and several were wounded. Shops were wrecked and looted and other property destroyed.
The capital this morning issued a general order to the police forces of the State to arrest and hold for examination every known Communist for possible connection with the riots throughout the State.
