OBITUARY
MR JOSEPH DAVIES.
A link Avith the early days of broadcasting in New Zealand was broken by the death on Monday of Mr Joseph Davies at his home in Khandallah, Wellington, for he had been the first director of Station 2YA.
The late Mr Davies, aa t lio Avas born in Wanganui in the entered the Railway Department, qualifying as an engineer. After Avorking in Ncav Zealand for some years he left for England, whore he av-xs employed by the Vickors-Maxim Company until he AA*as appointed to a position in the Singapore branch of the Shell Oil Company. He remained 7 n the East for several years, travelling extensively in China, Japan, and Malaya. When war broke out he AA*as commissioned by the British Admiralty as superintending engineer at Bombay, converting ships into oil carriers. In 1918 he returned to Singapore, remaining there until the New Zealand broadcasting service was established, when he came to Wellington as station director for 2YA.
