AMATEUR BOXING

GOOD NIGHT’S ENTERTAINMENT

PUBLIC LACK OP INTEREST. BETTER SUPPORT DESERVED,

The,.amateur tourney run by the "Whangarei Boxing Association in the Town Hall last evening, deserved better support than was forthcoming. The house was very patchy, and lack of interest, not the weather, must be cited as the cause for most of the gaps. A good programme had been arranged and this worked out better in the ring than it did on paper. The second bout, H. Salle, of Ruakaka, v. S, Bell (Northland Gym.) started the sparks. Bell started off nicely, but Salle -proved to be a -dark-horse and before the first round was over, -refereeB. Nelson stopped the bout in his favour. The next bout produced a couple of hard hitters; in ,C. Lacey and H. Wellington. In the second round 'Wellington was down a couple of times, but he fought back fiercely and points won earlier and the aid of a powerful right in the final stanza- gave him victory. There was good boxing , between Davis and Hughes, both of whom know their job -and turned on a bright display. The final round was a clinker and had the crowd on its toes. .The verdict wont to Davis. The touch -of comedy so necessary came with McDonald and Baliantyne. SHio former used a flail action and .turned himself into knots and the latter did not know much more. It was a bout the crowd enjoyed and a draw was well received. Doubtful Verdict. The first of the starred bouts, Kokich v. Cooke, started quite tamely and the first session was anyone’s. Kokich made the pace brisker after the breather and went ahead on points, although Cooke was not giving much away and held up a. perfect defence. At the end of the third, honours were still with Kokich, but Cooke had made up leeway before they went out for the final round ,and went on to score well. Many thought he should have been awarded the bout, and u draw

would have boon a hotter verdict than a points decision to Kokich. Then came a hit more comedy, Ellis turning on an-absolutc farce, which earned gusts of laughter. Newey, his opponent, won the honours. A bright and scientific spar between two Dargaville boys, Hackett and Moran, was .succeeded by the heavies, Rika and Mahunga. One blow by the former was enough and Mahunga capitulated and was taken to hospital. Other Star Bout. Painter had a shade the better of the opening exchanges, but Estall was shaping well. The Whangarei boy scored at the beginning of the second session, but Estall came back nicely and floored Painter just before the gong. Estall was boxing prettily, and, with Painter tiring, was leading when the third session ended. Painter had a lot to make up in the fifth, but ho had the appearance of being overtrained and was tiring very quickly. The Auckland boy bad him down in the first minute, but was also too tired to follow up his advantage. Painter tried hard to make the best of his last chance, but ho could not make up the leeway and Estall took the match. The Results. Featherweight.—S. Covicli (Ruakaka), 8.12, beat 1..
