Pray also convey to Frau Dollfuss, on behalf of the Queen and myself, our heartfelt condolences. ” Questioned in the House of Commons regarding the Austrian situation, Sir John Simon road an official version of yesterday’s event communicated verbally to the Diplomatic Corps -in Vienna last night He continued: “I understand that the insurgents are now in custody, the safe conduct promised to them being treated as having lapsed by reason of the death of the Chancellor, The identity of those who actually fired on the Chancellor is believed to be known. “In spite of the temporary success of the insurgents in raiding the Federal Chancellory and Radio Station, they received no general support from the population, either in Vienna or in the provinces, Avlicre, according to latest reports, everything is now under control. “Baron Franckenstein informed’mo that he had hoard officially from his Government that Dr. Dollfuss lived for a considerable time after he was shot, and was allowed to bleed to death by his assassins, who refused him both medical and spiritual aid. “I may add. that the attitude of this country as to the independence and integrity of Austria, in. accordance with relevant treaties, as stated in the declaration which I made on behalf of His Alajesty’s Government in February last, remains unchanged bytheso tragic events. “On February 17 the French, Italian and British Governments agreed on the issue of the following communique:— ‘The Austrian Government has inquired of the Governments of Franco, Great Britain and Italy as to their attitude with regard to the dossier which I prepared with a view to establishing’ German interference in the. internal affairs of Austria. The conversations which had taken place between the three Governments on this subject have shown that they have a common view as to the necessity of maintaining Austria’s independence and integrity in accordance with relevant treaties.’ ” A statement is reported to have boon made by the Italian Foreign Office today that support for the Nazi in- . surgents did not materialise, and they are left in a deplorable condition as ; regards the Austrian population.
