ESCAPED THROUGH WINDOW

ELDERLY COUPLE IN DANGER. HOUSE IN FLAMES. TIMELY AID OF TAXI DRIVER. (Per Press Association.—Copyright.) INVERCARGILL, Thursday. A narrow escape from death by burning was experienced by Air and Airs .1. G. Paget, an elderly couple, early yesterday morning, when a house in Racecourse Road in which they resided caught lire. Airs Paget was awakened by the noise of flames, and she aroused her husband. The only way of escape was through the bedroom window, and Air Paget was faced with grave difficulty, as his wife is partially paralysed, and he knew he would have to lift her through the window and lower her to the ground. The bottom half of the window jammed, and Afr Paget was endeavouring to get his wife through the ton part when help unexpectedly arrived. A taxi-driver Avas returning to Invercargill from Gore, when his attention was attracted by the house burning fiercely, and when he reached the scene he observed Mr Paget endeavouring to lift his wife through the window. this time the bedroom was in flames, and there was not a minute to spare. The two men soon had Mrs Paget safely out of the burning room, little the worse for her nerve-racking experience. The house was situated outside the city area, so that the services of the fire brigade would not have been available.
