BOYS’ DAY

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS WONDERFUL ORGANISATION. TODAY’S EVENTS. Records were imperilled in more ways than one when the annual sports of the Whangarei High School commenced this morning. Not only was the competition immeasurably keen and of high standard, but the organisation left nothing to be desired. The chief executive official, Mr D. A. Bird, had everything woiking like well-oiled machinery, and he had the absolute co-operation of the staff and the youthful athletes. No sooner had the igun banged to signalise the start of a race than, it seemed, the whistle shrilled to advise that fields were readv for the next event.

An indication of the systematic manner in which the sports were arranged was that the ten heats in the 100 yards junior handicap were completed in eight minutes. With such a lengthy programme, of well over 100 individual races, speed was most essential. A record went in the second event of the day—the 880yds intermediate championship—in which K. Rika bettered the time established by L. McBeath last year. The previous best time for the race was 2min 25 2-ssec. Conditions wore ideal, there being a complete absence of wind. Results are as follow: 880 Yards Senior Championship, Mason Cup.—A. Jeff 1, B. Given 2, E. Edwards 2.
