CAWTHRON INSTITUTE
LAST OF ORIGINAL TRUSTEES. BISHOP SADLIER RESIGNS. (Per Press Association. —Copyright.) NELSON, This Day. With the resignation of Bishop Sad iier, the Cawthron Trust Board loses the last of the original trustees. During the course of his reply at .1 farewell tendered by the board and staff of Cawthron Institute, Bishop Sadlier recalled that the estate had been most difficult to realise. The greater.part was mortgaged, Mr Cawthron had not kept books according to modern practice, and his business letters were written on the backs of envelopes. He recalled that the trustees were faced with the realisation of the estate and then had to determine what kind, if any, institute should be found ed, Mr Cawthron had said a technical school, institute and museum. The trustees put a plan before the court, which approved most things except scholarships. The trustees had felt that the institute should go as closely as possible into original research into the problems of agricultural pursuits in New Zealand. The constitution of the board should be very carefully preserved, because every new- man who came in had a tremendous lot to learn. Bishop Sadlier returned thanks IV the presentation of a bound volume of views of the institute’s work, which would bring before him so many dreams, memories of battles, controvor sics'and hard work in fellowship round the table. The present staff were worthy successors of those who begun. He wished the greatest possible success to the institute, so that its work would stand out in the history of science as one of the most useful to the man on the land and the public gener- ; ailv.
