ONE-DAY STRIKE
BROKEN HILL PROTEST. COMPENSATION DISPUTE. (ReeeiA T ed 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, Mareli 21. A general strike occurred at Broken Hill yesterday as a protest against the Government's removal of a number of families from benefits under the Compensation Act. They had been receiving payments arising out of the death of men from pneumoconiosis. All the shops and theatres were closed, but the hotels remained open. There Avas no bread and no ice, and only a partial milk delivery. No newspaper AA r as published. The essential sendees, such as lighting, Avater and railways, were carried on by special arrangements. At meetings of citizens the speakers include a clergyman. Resolutions were passed demanding the restoration to the affected people of the benefits under the Act, otherwise a further stoppage probably .would take place. Today cA’crything is normal again. The loss to tradespeople is estimated at about £3OOO.
