QUEER FISH
NEWTS FROM MELBOURNE,
(Special to “Northern Advocate.”)
DUNEDIN, This Day,
The Wainni arrived yesterday with an unusual consignment of amphibians from Melbourne for a Dunedin retail fish shop. These interesting fish, known as newts, are better known in England, where they are found in nearly every slow-running stream or drain. When confined to a miniature aquarium, the amphibians make an interesting exhibit, being quite harmless. The only difficulty is that they often leave their watery home, and may be found crowding over tables and furniture, to the consternation of those who do not understand them. The highly-coloured reddish under-surface is in striking contrast with the sambre brown of the back and sides. The newts are said to change their skins occasionally, and to day their eggs attached to fronds of w~ced.
