LOWER FREIGHTS
NEW ZEALAND CONTRACT. AUSTRALIAN PROSPECTS BRIGHTER. (Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 17. Although the details of the New Zealand produce freight contracts will not bo disclosed before the end of the month, it is authoritatively stated that the rates will be lowered. The “Sydney Morning Herald” says that the prospects of agreement between the overseas shipowners and the shippers of Australian produce to the. United Kingdom on the question of freights is considered bright, following the submission of a new offer by the exporters of refrigerated produce and wool.
One prominent exporter said: “We "would like to know on what basis the New Zealand shippers have reached agreement with the shipowners. Wo base our case on the disparity already existing between the rates between Australia and New Zealand.” A cable has been received from the head office of the Blue Star line, „emphasising the fact that, although the line will shortly be running a service to New Zealand, it will not interfere with the plan to establish a service to the Commonwealth next year, provided the line is not excluded from the Australian . freight contracts.
