ONERAHI

(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) Personal. Mrs Ewing Mine down from Whangarei Inst week for a few days’ visit to the township and to look up old friends. She was the guest' of her mother, Mrs J. Connolly. Hockey There was again a large and enthusiastic crowd on the Domain ground on Thursday to watch the match, Onerahi ladies’ hockey club against the Wesley team from Whangarei. The ground was dry and in splendid order and the strenuous battle resulting was well worth watching. Wesley put up a jolly good game, but there seemed a want of tactics on the part of the city players that prevented them from turning their chances to account. Not that Onerahi gave many chances. The local players wore in grand form, and won the match] by 5 points to nil. I Storm and Rain. Last week’s springlike weather came to sudden interruption on Thursday night. The wind came away from the north, rising before midnight to full gale strength. Wild gusts swept across the plateau, and shook the houses to their foundations, and deluging rain added to the turmoil. Watertables became cataracts , and culverts spouting geysers as they carried the storm water to the sea. It was a wild night off the coast, and Onerahi passengers by the Claymore describe it as their worst trip for many a day. A heavy rolling sea, dead in her tooth, set the vessel, at one moment pirouetting on her stern, and in the next, to dive her nose into it and stand on her head, as the billow passed under her. In some of the heavier gusts, the good ship seemed to be absolutely driven back as she plugged her way northwards. It says much for her captain’s seamanship to have brought her through with only four hours delay.

Loss and Sympathy. The news of the sudden death, on his farm, of Mr Aubrey, of Patana, came as a distinct shock to many in Oncrahi, where lie was well known as a frequent visitor. A man of sterling character and rectitude, he hai many close friends among the older residents, who will feel his death as.a personal loss. Keenest sympathy is expressed for Mrs Aubrey, herself an Oner'ahi girl, in Per

irreparable bereavement, and for the family. Football. Football enthusiasts had a treat on the Domain on Saturday at the match, Oncrahi v. a combined service team from Whangarei. It was football at its best. Both sides put up a notable game, and play was fast and strenuous. ‘.More than once it looked as if . the visitors would win, but Oncrahi was not to be denied, and victory went to the latter by 6 points to 3.
