BRITISH INDUSTRY. IRON AND STEEL PRODUCTION. SHIPPING BUSINESS IMPROVES. (Received noon.) LONDON,'-’August 15. The National Federation of Iron and Steel Manufacturers report a steady increase of production since the beginning of the year. Signs of trade improvement are also indicated in reports from industrial and other centres, in several of which, although unemployment figures continue to bo high, work compared with last year has increased.
An upward tendency in business is also reflected in London shipping. Excluding vessels in ballast, 4248 cargo vessels used the Port of London during the last three weeks of July, over 600 more than the corresponding period last year. Registered tonnages were 000,000 greater. Passenger traffic also showed considerable expansion, but some portion of this increase is due to the development of ocean cruising holidays. Treasury’s Good Showing. The latest Treasury returns show that the total of ordinary revenue for the current financial year up to August 12 amounted to £207,608,091, compared with £201,036,870 at the corresponding date last year. Ordinary expenditure to date in the current year totalled £255,571,098. which is £33,000,000 less than at the corresponding date in 1932.
