UNUSUAL RAINFALL
FLOODS IN TARANAKI. NEW PLYMOUTH AFFECTED. OKAHUKURA TUNNEL BLOCKED. (Per Press Association.— Copyright.) NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. The heaviest rainfall in three years at New Plymouth fell on Saturday and Sunday, causing floods in a number of places, and other damage. For the 24 hours ended 7.30 a.m. on Sunday, the rainfall at New Plymouth was 2.53 in. Yesterday afternoon the water level at the intake of Lake Mangamohoe, from which the town's water -supply and electric power come, rose from the normal height of 2ft Gin to 17ft. * The Mangatuku stream, flowing through New Plymouth, -caused considerable damage. One house was imperilled by a large slip a few yards away. Very heavy rain also fell in the Ohura. district which is isolated, road communication on both sides being blocked. On the Stratford Alain Trunk line the Okahukura tunnel is blocked by a slip and at Tuhua the low-level bridge is under water. At Inglewood the -phenomenal fall of u.Olin occurred during the 24 hours preceding 0 a.m. yesterday, which is the heaviest fall since 102.1, The main north road to Auckland from Now Plymouth will be blocked for some time by a large slip at Tongaporutu. Flooding has occurred at Uruti, Piopio, and ou other parts of the road.
