WALTON STREET CORNER

CHAMBER PRESSES MATTER. REPLY TO COUNCIL. —— i The Walton Street corner question again came before the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce last evening. Mr C. V. Stringer presided. A reply was received from the Town Clerk, Mr A. D. Jack, in conuocI tion with representations made by the chamber to the Borough Council for the rounding off of the Cameron and Walton Streets corner. Mr Jack replied that the council had not lost sight of the matter, but, owing to the various services which would require to be diverted, the work would be an extensive one which the council did not see its way to undertake at the present time. In opening, discussion on the question the chairman said that recently he had visited the scene and met the Borough Engineer, who had informed him that the work would necessitate an outlay of £2OO. Mr Stringer said that the footpath would have to be raised one foot, and there were one or two cesspits to be altered. He considered that the chamber should continue to press for the carrying out of the work, lie was not quite satisfied with the reply. Mr .1. G. Barclay submitted that it would, not be a wise policy to only repair the corner and leave the remainder of the footpath untouched. Hr J. E. Holmes informed the meet ing that the Borough Council was endeavouring to spend as little money as possible, and (he Mayor was co-oper-ating with a view to keeping down the rates. , Mr J. W. Parkin, in agreeing with the view expressed by the chairman, said that as the corner was undoubtedly very dangerous, especially when Ira flic was congested, the proposed work should be carried nut. In reply to a question by Mr R. 11. Allan, Air Holmes slated that no land would have to be taken to permit of the work being undertaken, The chairman considered that the j corner, en extremely busy one, should be rectified now and the remainder of the seetlou laler. Dismission was brought to a head when Mr Parkin moved that a furthe" letter be written to the Borough Council asking for reconsideration of (he - corner. This was carried unanimously.
