“TONS OF MONEY”

PLAY AT PAPAHOA. The Paparoa Theatrical Society, which scored such a splendid success last year in the presentation of the comedy “Mr Pirn Basses By,” opened their second season ,in the Garrison Hall on Saturday evening last, when the three-acl farce “Tons of .Money’’ (by Evans and Valentine) was given before a, large audience, I’aparoa and adjacent districts being well represented. The play, which provided a. fund of amusement for the gathering, was staged and produced by Mr L.*s. Haynes, in collaboration with Dr. E. Tewslcy Dawson. The following was the cast, in order of appearance. — Sprules (a butler), Dr. E, T. Dawson; Simpson (a parlourmaid), Aliss E. Conrr-li; Aliss Bonita Alnllett (the aiaidcn aunt), Airs T. C. Aickin; Louise A’.lington, Miss AL Dodds; Aubrey Henry Afaitland AHington, Air Les. Haynes; Giles (a gardener), Mr D. 11. Nicholas; James Chesterman (a lawyer), Air Tom Aickin; Jean Everard, Aliss A. Dodds; “Henry,'’ Air Evan Rishworth; George Alaitland, Air L. D. Goodall. The scone for the three acts is Aubrey Henry Alaitland” i house at. Alarlow. Three weeks I elapse between Acts 1 and 2, while Acts 2 and 3 eventuate on the same afternoon. The production was executed with remarkable skill. The dramatic talent of the performers had been well developed and gave evidence of careful and thorough training. The piece abounded in many passages of sparkling wit and thrusts of clever repartee. Lovers of farcical comedy found in it a fund of entertainment and amusement. Air Los. Haynes as Aubrey Ailington, and Aliss V, Dodds, as his wife Louise, .sustained the leading parts well, and their acting left nothing to be desired. Dr. Dawson, as Hprulos, the butler, and Aliss E. Cornish, as the parlourmaid, gave good characterisations of their parts, the former excelling in clear enunciation. Aliss Bonita Alnllett, the maiden aunt-(Mrs T. C. Aickin) looked on reprovingly at the frolics of youth, offering sage counsel and advice. Giles the gardener (Air D. Nicholas) caused much diversion by li is well-meant, but imdesired assistance in bringing eggs, vegetables, etc., to the .parlour. .Messrs T. Aickin, E. Rishworth, -and L. Goodall gave good delineations of their roles. The part of Jean Everard was very well sustained by Aliss A. Dodds. In the staging and general production of the play, much credit is duo to Air Haynes and Dr. E. T. Dawson for heavy w'ork involved, and also to all the participants for their willing service. Door takings were £23, and the funds are to be given for the installation of a new lighting plant at the Anglican Church. In their eh nice of play, it cannot be said that the society are as fortunate as when they staged their line success in “Air Pirn Passes By,” which was much more worthy of the unquestioned talent they have shown, but there is little doubt that “Tons of Alonoy” will have a successful season as the various centres are visited.
