The death is announced of .Miss Russell Spain, aged 8(1, wdiose father, William Spain, inquired into the New Zealand Company’s claims in the 1840 ’a. His .award of (iOjOOO acres in favour of the company at Waitara "was set aside by Governor Fitzroy, who feared trouble with the Ngatiaw’a tribe. The dispute caused discontent among the pakohas and Jed to the war •which began in 1860.
