THE SHOOTING SEASON.
To the Editor, Sir. —Recently, at the conclusion ofthe Whangarei Acclimatisation Society’s meeting, the chairman, in a valediet, ory remark, wished all sportsmen well-filled bags. But one asks how arc the sportsmen to get well-filled bags when two columns of prohibition notices against, dog and .gun , stay them with threatened prosecution. The average license-holder thinks this permit enables him to shoot anywhere in the Whangarei county. An Act of Parliament passed some two years ago gives protection to the farmer, and allows him to prosecute any person with dog or gun who disturbs his stock. To me, the whole thing is a farce, and a. gun license fee (all farmers included) of £.l would meet the occasion. Why should the land-holder have it both ways—allow his friends to shoot over his property and block the other fellow 1 ? Now, I must say in conclusion that the number of half-grown birds predominates throughout the county, and shooting licenses should be deferred till July. The sportsman likes something worth while. —I am, etc., A. PULE,
