CABBAGE BUTTERFLY

A VORACIOUS PEST.

APPEARANCE IN WHANGAREI.

A specimen of the Cabbage White Butterfly, which is doing a considerable amount of damage in the Hawke's Bay district, but which, it was believed, had not as yet invaded the North, has been handed to Mr jC, V. Stringer. The pest was first seen in the Napier district in .1930, and began to spread rapidly all over the North Island. It is a bad pest, and has been causing a tremendous lot of trouble in the South. Apparently it has now started to invade thg North.

The butterfly is white, with a wing spread of about an inch and a half, while towards the edges of the wings are bluish-black smears. The specimen shown to Mr Stringer was the first he has seen in the North, and was obtained in Whangaroi.

It attacks all members of the cabbage family, and k> capable of doing widespread harm. It is very voracious, and once it gets into a place it is very hard to eradicate. People will be doing the district a service if they kill any of these insects which they happen to notice.
