AUCKLAND, This Day,

The tragic sequel to a trifling accident was described in the coroner's court at the inquest on Mrs Amelia Patten, aged dl, today. Her husband said that on April 14 she was chopping wood in the back yard and a. small piece flew back and struck her on the ankle. The wound was bathed, disinfected, and an ointment applied, and next morning a splinter removed. There was no further trouble till April 2d, when another splinter was removed. Later, soreness of the face and tongue developed, and she could get no sleep. On April 27 medical aid was called, and she was removed to hospital, where she died on April .‘lO. The husband said the splinters were from a piece of kauri, which evidently' 1 had been lying in the sea for years. It had a strong fishy smell. . The inquest was adjourned. It is believed death was due to lockjaw.
