TARIFF QUESTION RAISED,
A BRITISH STATEMENT; -
(British Official Wireless.? (Received 11.30 a:rn.) ; ; • y. RUGBY, May'l
In the absence of Sir John Simon, Mr. Stanley Baldwin answered the foreign affairs questions in the House of Commons to-dav.
Regarding the new Ma nch'ukuo tariff, he said he had seen a press report to the effect that it would be based ' on reciprocity with Japan, and that Manchukuo’s trade door would not-remain open to the states which withheld recognition of her status. The statement, said Mr. Baldwin, was obviously in complete contradistinction with the repeated declarations of the Japanese Government and of the present administrative' authorities in Manchukuo, which aim at the preservation of the open door as provided for by. .the treat v. . ...
If it should appear that. it,- represented their intentions', His. Majesty’s Government would naturally take "any steps open to it to defe'hd tile" principle in question. At present, however, he Tiad no information to show thht this was the case, and lie found it .difficult to credit the report in Anew of the assurances to Avdiieh he had referred.
