WAITANGI ESTATE

GIFT OP TREES,

FROM INSTITUTE OF HORTICULTURE. Amongst the trees donated by the Auckland Council of the above institute to tlje Waitangi Trust Board were two orange trees propagated from the original one planted by the late Airs Jas. Kemp at Kerikcri in 1818, Miss C. Kemp .forwarded an orange taken from the original tree which was presented to His Excellency the Governor-General at Waitangi on the occasion when he planted the young orange trees. Miss Kemp, writing to Air G. A. Green, Dominion organiser of the, New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, on the 4th inst., says;—

“I must tell you that we duly forwarded a fruit of the old Kemp orange to His Excellency at Waitangi, receiving in reply a most kind lettei of thanks for ‘the charming gift/ also for ‘the kind, thought which prompted it.’ His Excellency also forwarded a photo of himself planting the historic tree.” Thus, in a most fitting manner, has a living - link been forged by Lord Blodisloe in planting this scion of an historic tree, between the planting of Ihe first orange tree by the late Airs dames Kemp in pre-Treaty days and the great gift to the nation of Waitang! Treaty House and lands by Lord Blcdidloe and the Lady Bledisloe.
