THREAT TO MAYOR

(Per Press Association.—Conyright.} CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The Mayor, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., stated during- an election address last evening that he had received ' a large number of anonymous letters containing serious threats against him by a revolting group in the city. These Had heeii handed to the police. The revolutionary group, the Mayor said, was not a large one, but its members were very angry with him for what he was doing to alleviate distress in the city. “I have received anonymous letters demanding that I ('ease taking up collections in the street and cease giving out relief,” said Mr Sullivan.
“When I ignored those letters I received others telling me that if I did not stop they would drag me from bed and tar and feather me. My answer was to organise another street collection, which yielded £2300.”
