We invite correspondence, but do not identify ourselves with. ;tha view’s, expressed by our. correspondents Letters must be written in ink and or one side of the paper only. The real name and address of the writer must be attached, to a letter, not necessarily for publication, but as a mark of good aith.—Ed.] 1 . THE MAYORALTY. , (To the Editor.) Sir, —I have learned with astonishment that remarks w hich’l made when speaking in favour of a request that Mr R. S. Finch should allow himself to be nominated for the Mayoralty arc being misrepresented by people who are obviously doing so for election purposes. I expressed the opinion that if Mr Finch were elected Mayor, Whangarei would possess - a Alayoress who would fill the ‘ position with credit. Anybody who knows ’Mrs Pinch will heartily agree with that statement. But to imagine that I w’ished to infer that Mrs Jones does
not fill the position of Mayoress with credit is absolutely grotesque. Nobody holds Mrs Jones in higher esteem than I do nor pays more sincere tribute to her good qualities as a lady and as Mayoress. It is nothing short of wicked to suggest that I had any idea of comparing the two ladies whose names are being made use of. I am sure that the electors' will see through the propaganda of which use is being made. lam firmly of the opinion that the election of Mr’Eihch as Mayor is desirable, but I strongly resent the meanness of venomous mis-chief-makers who are using the names of candidates' wives as a smoke screen. —I am, etc., j. a. finlayson:
