CHARMING SCENES
AT VAYAU ISLAND,
VICE-REGAL RECEPTION,
PARTY EX ROUTE TO SAMOA,

A visit to Vavau Island was made by the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, and the Lady Bledislop yesterday, H.M.S. Diomede entering the harbour in the morning. Conditions were ideal throughout the day and a good opportunity was afforded to explore what is recognised as the most beautiful island in the Tongan Group.
Many charming scenes greeted the Vice-Regal party ' as the warship steamed up the harbour to the town of Neiafu, which is the port of residence of the Governor. The town is beautifully situated, overlooking the harbour, and has quite a modern appearance.
A cordial reception was extended to the visitors by the native chief, local residents and hundreds of natives, wild were picturesque in attire. Characteristic congs and dances were given..with all the charm and grace of the light-hearted native islanders, their delightful entertainment lasting for some hours. Launch excursions were made .to Swallow Cave, on the coast of Kapa Island. This lovely spot is famous and the visitors were thrilled by unique experiences.
Their Elccllencies wore entertained at dinner by tlie officers of the Diomede, who welcomed their guests with diverting kava ceremonies. Dinner was followed by amateur theatricals in which topical sketches of highly amusing description wore presented.
The Diomede loft Ynvan at seven this morning and is due at Samoa tomorrow.
