Signs of a fire in the buildings of Messrs Whitcombe and Tombs, booksellers and stationers, in Lambton Quay, early on Sunday morning, brought the fire brigade quickly to the scene. On breaking into the building, the firemen found that burglars had been at work in the show room on the ground floor and on the first storey. The fire was quickly extinguished, little damage being done. It was confined to books alone, which smouldered without bursting into flame. The e\tent of the theft is not yet known.
