CHINESE PIRATES
CUSTOMS LAUNCH ATTACKED. AGROUND ON MUDBANK. BRITISHERS DEAD AND MISSING. (Received 9 a.m.) HONGKONG, April 17. A Chinese Customs launch struck a mud bank at low tide early this morning on Pang Chong Island, 15 miles off Macao, on the Canton River. The launch was attacked by pirates, who shot a European officer, Mr 'E. Pearce. The chief officer is missing/ and it is believed that another officer/ Mr Baldwin, died of wounds. . A Chinese engineer and boatman both were injured. The launch is missing. Mr Baldwin’ formerly was in the British Navy, and was lightweight boxing champion of the China Elect.
