MEETING AT HUKERENUI. DECISION NOT TO PAY RATES, CHAIRMAN’S CASTING VOTE.

At the request of the Hukeremii branch of the. Fanners’ Union, the Whangarei county chairman, Ml' L. Webb, and the riding member, Cr F. Elliott, were invited to address the last meeting of the branch on tho derating of rural lauds. Twenty-six members were present. The subject was. exhaustively gone into by the two speakers, rvho explained the position from all aspects. Numerous questions were asked, and at the close the following resolution was put to the meeting: —

“That County Council members be requested not to strike a rate, but if such rate were to be struck, then members of tho Farmers’ Union pledge themselves not to pay the same.”

After some discussion the resolution was put to the meeting and declared carried on the easting vote of the chairman.
