Shaw played his best game of the championship, when he returned a card of 71 in the' final round on Saturday afternoon. His nearest opponents were Arthur Duncan and Douglas, but as Shaw wont out in 33, Duncan in 38 and Douglas 39, they had little possibility of overtaking him. Shaw’s aggregate for the four rounds was 289, an average of 72.5 a round, the scratch score or the course being 72. Third round results: —

The Play Described. The first pair to tee off at 0 o’clock comprised C. A. Seymour and J. A. Clements. -Shaw left with D. C. Collins —the former Dominion Cricket captain—twenty minutes later. Arthur Duncan (who was only a stroke behind Shaw yesterday, despite the fact that ho is over 60) did not get away until 10.15, his partner being C. H. Stephenson. E. J. Moss and H. A. Black, who tied for third place on Friday, went out at 10 o’clock and 10.25 respectively', the former with J. P. Mortland (Taihape), who did so well in the amateur championship at Shirley in October last year, and the latter with G. W. Melvin.

Shaw strengthened his position by another solid round of 72. He made the outward journey in 35, stopping on the lip of the fifth hole for a two, and getting an "eagle’’ 3 at the seventh (a bogey 5 and par 4 hole). Two beautiful woods at the eighth (536 yds), the longest hole nn the course, left him 50yds from the pin, and lulling an lift putt too he got a "birdie" 4. At the first three holes coming home lie was a bit strong with seconds, but retrieved with one putt, except at the eleventh. At the thirteenth ho slipped a stroke, and made his score one over fours. His putting let him down at the next two holes (bogey threes) and he took 4 at each. "Chipping" dead at the sixteenth Shaw obtained a three. Ho missed the opportunity of scoring another three at the eighteenth by failing to hole a 3ft putt, but completed the round in even fours. His tally- for throe rounds is 2 IS.

The early- players had all the best of the conditions, as the wind increased at times to the force of a gale, accompanied by- rain. Shaw was one of the fortunate ones, and also Sy-me, whose 7.1 is likely- to bo the best of the morning, tieing with Harold Black and Bilk (71 on Friday) for the best round of the meeting to date.

Third Place To Douglas.

Douglas played another steady round and liis 72 leaves him in third place, as both Harold Black and Moss had poor rounds. Douglas was out in 37, with three fives, and threes at the oneshot holes. Coining home he picked up a stroke from bogey at the tenth and twelfth, and did not make a mistake till the fifteenth, the scene of his previous downfall. The wind made it extremely difficult to stop on this green, even with a niblick, and Douglas, being too strong, had to concede a penalty, but he got down with a chip and a putt for 4. A three at the sixteenth regained him the lost stroke; and after trickling into the seventeenth bunker with his second shot to take 5, he finished with a four. Moss, who commenced the third round two strokes behind Shaw, lost his chance this morning by playing a poor round of S2. His second shots to the green with the following wind were just too strong, and. he' had just the clement of ill-fortune for several to trickle over the back or side of the green into the bunker. He was out 'in 3!) with three fives. On reaching the fifteenth lie had had three more fives, and failing to reach the fifteenth green lie was trapped in a hazard, and did not recover with his second shot, taking a six. fie sliced his tee shot into a creek at (he sixteenth—another five—and also slipped another stroke at the eighteenth. He was home in 43. Pino Performance. Brilliant golf was played by Arthur Duncan, whose round in 73 maintained him in second place. Ho played the first nine holes in 3fi, which included no loss than five throes, at the second, third, fifth, seventh and ninth holes, two bogeys, two “birdies,’' and an “eagle” at the seventh (the 444yds*

hole bogey, with five). The long eighth cost him six when he was short with his approach. Coming homo he dropped a stroke at the eleventh and fifteenth, but regained one at the eighteenth with a perfect three. He was homo in 37. Cup and Vase. Moss did a tine concluding round of 70, 35 each way. His was a magnificent performance under the conditions, and it gained him, the Earl Jellicoe Cup for the best single round in the open championship. The challenge vase, presented by the late Dennis O’Rorko, for an inter-club teams match, decided in conjunction ivith the third round, was won by the Hutt Club with an aggregate of 310 (Fisher .82, Cook 77, McGregor 75, Wagg 76), Wanganui was the runnerup with 31S (Silk 7S, Reilly 78, Goss 87, M. H. Duncan 75). Other scores were:-—Wellington, 321; Wairarapa, Otago, and Christchurch, 327; Miramar, 333. Troutbeck and the two professionals, L G. Ross and Macdougall, did not return cards in the final round. The leading 16 professionals qualified for match play in the professional championship. Detailed Figures.
