OTTAWA PROVISIONS

WORSTED AND WOOLLEN.

TRADE BENEFIT ASSERTED,

(Received 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 30.

A special correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” states that- employers and employees in the West Riding alike declare as unjustifiable the scepticism regarding the, value of Ottawa to the worsted and woollen trades expressed by Mr H. Hcldsworth, M.P. (Liberal, Bradford), in the House ,of Commons, that nobody in the woollen trade expected any benefit from the agreements. Last year's duties considerably benefited the trade of Bradford and Huddersfield, despite the huge dumping of foreign cloths just before the duties were imposed. The new duties enable Yorkshire manufacturers to meet their foreign rivals on competitive terms. Much of the dumped cloths had already been re-exported. The home trade had improved and exports were reviving. The latter were bow only checked by the currency restrictions in Eastern Europe and South America.
