THE WHEAT CONTROVERSY

ABOLITION OF DUTIES

REMIT REJECTED

(Per Press Association. —CooyriKht.) DUNEDIN, This Day.

A remit from Hamilton urging abolition of all wheat duties at the earliest possible date was moved by Mr A. M. Seaman (Auckland) on behalf of Hamilton at. the conference, of the .Associated Chambers of Commerce yesterday. He said that the Auckland Association had not brought forward a similar remit because it thought it unlikely that it would 1m given impartial and unbiassed consideration. (Laughter). The remit was not in accordance with his own views or those of his chamber. There was no discussion, and the chairman said the remit was unanimously rejected. The Hamilton Chamber also submitted a remit protesting against the action of the Government in placing the sole power of handling and distributing the milling wheat imported by it in the hands of the Wheat MarketI ing Board. i Mr A. F. Wright read a lengthy eorn--1 rnunication from the board covering

the whole transaction regarding their importation. The Government had made no charge for its services and had made no profit. I The remit was withdrawn.
