OTAKAIRANGI NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Farm Notes. Dairying is once more in full swing, and hopes arc entertained for a successful season. Settlers have taken advantage' of the prevailing fine weather to attend to a considerable amount of work on the land before the press of dairy work commences! Mr W. J. Thorburn’s Riponui farm is showing the benefit accruing from systematic draining and top-dressing, the sward of grass there being in excellent heart. Mr C. Lovell has completed the erection of a modern shed, with the latest improvements for convenience in handling a large herd. The pastures here are also showing the benefit from scientific treatment. Mr Lovell is also effecting considerable improvements on his homestead farm. It is pleasing to find the river flats workable this spring. Messrs Grantham Bros, are clearing and burning off their riverside area, and, on the other side, Mr Thorburn has a nice piece of his river flat cleared and ploughed. Mr W. H. Lewis has attended to necessary draining. His new grass is looking splendid, and is ready for feeding off. Mr W. .1. Thorburn’s homestead farm is showing up well as a result of the improvements carried out during the past few years, and Messrs ,Dunford and W. P. Hodge’s properties are also giving evidence of successful fanning. The cream supply from this district will be considerably up on previous records with anything like a favourable season.

Football. Great .interest was taken in the Otakairangi v. Tanekaha football mateli. A serateh team was selected by Mr W. .1. Thorburn and met the Tanekaha Hub representatives an a friendly game. Although our local team were handicapped by inexperience and lack of training, they played an excellent, game in the first spell, and neither side scored. In the second spell the game was very fast. White, a Whakapara representatives, made several openings and eventually scored the first try for Tanekaha. The kick at goal failed. This seemed to give, added zest to the game, and, 'after some mixed play, resulted in Forsyth getting across the line. Tanekaha again failed to convert. Although palpably tiring, Otakairangi forced the play down the field, and looked like scoring, When the hall want- out. During a

serum they were awarded a penalty kick, and Dangin raised the fiags. The game ended soon afterwards, T-anc-kaha fi, Otakairangi 3. Prominent players in the winning team were White and Da-vis (Whakapara) and Stirling (Whangarei). Mr O’Sullivan (Bay of Plenty rep.) eontrolled tlic game efficiently. Refreshments were kindly provided by the ladies of Tanekaha and were much appreciated. A dance in the evening brought to a. close a most enjoyable day. Tennis Club. The annual meeting of the local tennis club, held during the week, was well attended. The balance-sheet disclosed a satisfactory state of affairs. Approximately half the club’s liability has been paid off. Frequent inter-club matches during the past year were much enjoyed, and the prospects for the season at hand, with young players coming forward, are for a successful year. The election of officers was as follows; —President, Mr J. H. Thorburn; vice-president, Mr J. Ramsey; secretary and treasurer, Mrs W. J. Thorburn; captain, Mr H. Cotter!!!; vicecaptain, Mr W. d. Thorburn.
