WAIMAKARIRI RIVER. GREAT PROJECT FINALISED. (Per Press Association. —Copyright.} CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The last stage in the work of straightening the lower reach of the Wainiakariri River, the greatest river protection undertaking in the history of New Zealand, was successfully completed' this morning, when a cut was made "tilrough the sand dunes to the sea, thus- providing a new outlet. This is'the final of three cuts, all carried out with a view to securing a fast and unimpeded flow from the source to the sea and reducing the possibility of floods to a minimum. The total cost to date has been £216,000 .
