LADIES' HOCKEY

PORTLAND v. HOB A HORA, A CLOSE CONTEST. This game, played at Portland yesterday, was a fast and even one. The teams took the field as follows: Hora Hora (blue).—Misses L. Taylor, M. Ross, M. Play was returned to midfield, hnd remained there for several • minutes, until Miss: Carr secured and took the ball to the circle* before losing possession. HINEMOA WIN.

White Star, with only eight players, met a full Hinemoa team at Kensington Park and eventually were’ vanquished by two goals to one,, after a very even game. White Star scored first, and the eight played a good de J fen-sive and attacking game.

1 White Star went up the field' when ; iMiss Harris broke through alone. They [ kept Hinemoa defending when Miss D. Osborne carried play up the line. t A little later Hinemoa broke through f; and nearly scored, blit the goalie savt ed; There was a- corner, and from i this White Star were back on the [ .attack again. Miss 0. Harris again f .rushed through alone and scored a good t; goal.

Hinemoa set up an attack and White Star conceded a penalty corner, after which play swung back. Hinemoa could not gain any advantage, and White Star set up a strong defence and attack. Both jsides were breaking through, and some keen duels for possession were taking place.

White Star were again dangerous and Miss Gomez had to save. A few minutes * later she was v called upon again, but cleared successfully. • Hinemoa then worked back, but were not in White Star’s territory for loilg, and as half-time was called White Star were attacking.

On resuming, Miss’ Berghan took play along, but the goalie saved effectively when‘another player shot.. After some mid-field play, Hinemoa, who were now asserting themselves, again wont back, but could not score. There was some more keen work in White Star’s goal-mouth, and eventually Miss Berghan netted. Almost immediately after Miss Borghan had another shot, but it went wide.

Hinemoa were keeping up their attack, until White Stfr made a rapid

thrust and took the ball to Hinemoa’s quarter. MW 0. Harris rushed up to the goai-moutlf and had very hard luck in not scoring, Miss Gomez clearing well;' *

After a further period of even play, Miss Bcighan seared again,' and-, when iime was called there was no alteration in the scores. : Messrs J. Batchelor and G. Larking refereed. * AVOCA BEAT”WESLEY. Avoca beat Wesley by three goals, to nil, at Kensington Park. Avoca’s scores were obtained by Mrs McLeod, Mrs Martin and Miss O’Shea. Wesley went to Avoca’s circle on several occasions and, though very close, could not score. Miss G. Goode played a great defensive game for Wesley. , Messrs Larking and Batchelor refereed. OTHERREStTLTS. At the High School grounds, Jligh School B beat Wesley D by four goals to throe. Mr Everett was referee. Old Girls defeated High School A by four goals to two. Misses K. Tibbits (.°>) and Stewart scored for Old Girls and Miss Bossitter for School. Pakotai beat Wesley B by five goals to nil at th* School grounds.
