PINAFORE.”

Rehearsals for the production of Gilbert and Sullivan's famous bpera, "H.'M.S. Pinafore," are reaching the final stage. This afternoon the first full dress appearance was made. Everything went smoothly and patrons can be assured of a treat next week, when Little Buttercup, Sir Joseph Porter, Josephine, Ralph Raekstraw, Capt. Corcoran, Dick Deadeye, The Bosun, the Midshipmite and the crowds of sailors, marines and relations make their bow to a Whangarei audience. A chorus of 150 young voices has been in training throughout the term, and, although the performers vary in age from only nine years to ten and a half years, a surprising result has been attained. It lias been stated that the staging of a Gilbert and Sullivan opera was beyond such youthful performers, but the audience will be astonished at the ability displayed. The preparation of scenery is in 'the hands of Messrs Gunn and Owen, and a most realistic “ Pinafore" has been built, complete evenlb her cannon. A small orchestra will assist, and an entr’acte will be played by the well-known violinist, Mr G. Bingon.
