OBITUARY

A NOTED ARTIST. LONDON, April 5. ■ The death has occurred of Mr W. L. Vyllie, artist. i • The late Mr William Lionel Wyllio, painter of seascapes, was born in London in July 1851. His father also was an artist. In 1860, after a period of study at Heatherloys, he was entered as a student at the Royal Academy School. To the Exhibition of 1868 he contributed a picture. Next year “ha was represented at the first Burlington House Exhibition and at the end’ of the year ho won the Turner Medal for the best- painting of a coast scene, /‘.After a Storm.” Thereafter he was closely identified with the Royal Academy. In 1889 he was elected A.R.A. and in 1907 R.A. LADY WYNDHAM. LONDON, April 6. The death is announced of Lady Wyndham, formerly well known on the stage as Miss Mary Moore. Miss Mary Moore at one time was one of England’s most charming and graceful loading actresses’. In the late 80’s she made the most outstanding success of her career in Sir Charles Wyndham’s production at the Criterion Theatre of “David Garrick,” in which that distinguished, actor played the title role.

He arrived in New Zealand in 1850 with his parents, who settled in Nelson, hut removed a. year later to Wainui-o-Mata, where his two uncles, Messrs Richard and William Prouse, were settlers. Mr Wakoham married the only daughter of the, late Mr Jackson, of Petone, and lived there for many years after he retired from farming. He was a prominent * member of the Methodist Church'in his district and was also keenly interested in local body work. Tor 33. years ho was a member of tho Hutt County Council and was several times chairman. He also served on tho Pntono Borough Council, was a former member of the Taita Cemetery Beard, a ml. of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. In tho last few years he had lived in Palmefston North.
