AORANGI STOWAWAY
FINE IMPOSED. (Special to “Northern Advocate.”) AUCKLAND, Monclay. A well-dressed man, Thomas MeKeown, machinist, aged 28, who was arrested on the arrival of the Aorangi from Sydney this morning, later appeared at the Police Court, when he pleaded guilty to a charge of stowing away on board the vessel on, April 2. It was stated by Detective-Sergeant Kelly that McKeown was found on the ship an hour after she cleared Sydney. The amount of the fare was £7 10 s, . Mr Aekins, for accused, said McKeown recently arrived on the Aorangi at Sydney from Vancouver, hoping that he would secure work in New South Wales. He walked from Sydney to the Blue Mountains, but was unsuccessful in finding a position. “He was unfortunate in being fleeced of all the money he had, some dSO dollars, by confidence men in Vancouver, and now he has nothing, ” added counsel. MeKeown was fined £7 10/, in default 14 days imprisonment.
