STRIKE OPPOSED
RELIEF WORKERS’ DECISION. POLICE NOT REQUIRED, (Per Press Association. —Copyright.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Over 200 relief workers and unemployed, who met at the Trades Hall on Saturday, decided that they would not follow the lead of the Lyttelton men and strike as a protest against the Government’s proposal to reduce the rates of relief pay. At times the meeting was almost beyond the control of the chairman. A tense situation developed when the discovery was made that police constables and detectives were in the hall. There were loud cries requesting their removal. The chairman pointed out that the meeting was an orderly one. On his receiving a unanimous “yes” to his question as to whether the men desired the police officers to leave, the latter quietly walked from the hall.
