Swan, on his arrival at Southampton on the Ruahine, said he was glad that the New Zealanders’ tour had not fallen through, otherwise Britain might have taken an exaggerated view of the earthquake havoc. It was a team of strong batting and fielding, but the bowling was an unknown quantity. As there was fast bowler of outstanding merit the side must rely mainly on spin bowlers. The team was an exceptionally young one.
