SUDDEN COUP
MADEIRA TROOPS REVOLT GOVERNORS DEPOSED. MILITARY JUNTA FORMED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON, April 5. A message from Funchal, the chief town of Madeira, states that, on the alleged instigation of deportees from Lisbon, the local troops and troops sent from Lisbon to deal with a recent general strike revolted. The rebels arrested the High Commissioner and the Civil and Military Governors, took over the telegraph, telephones, the Bank of Portugal and the local, Finance Department, and nominated General Sousa Dias as Governor and head of a military junta. A manifesto issued by the junta says the movement is aimed at abolishing the revolutionary regime. The Portuguese Government tomorrow tfill despatch a cruiser and ma-chine-gun battaliom to Funchal.
