AIRPORT OPENED
INTERESTING CEREMONY. ■ WIND SPOILS CONTESTS. (Pet Pre»s Aiiocl»tlon. —uopynght.l WELLINGTON, This Day. The airport was formally opened on Saturday with a pageant, for which several planes assembled, two arriving from Auckland in the middle of the afternoon. The weather report had predicted unfavourable and stormy weather, but the sky was blue and the only drawback was a rather gusty north wind. Great interest was taken in the event, and the number of planes gave the spectators an opportunity of comparing the various shapes and types. The programme of competitions was not so .successful, as the wind interfered with some and others were almost finished before knew they had' started. The piece de resistance was to have been the bombing of the old concrete building that once sheltered the 'landing end of the .Strait’s cables, but this was a fiasco. The planes threw up a great amount of dust, and this made things unpleasant for the sptectators all afternoon, many leaving ratther than face the discomfort.
