WELFAEE LEAGUE

The monthly meeting- of the Management Committee was held in tue Portland Hall, and- was attended by Messrs A., C.-Whitham (chairman), A. J. Magee, A. Beavis, ;E. Williamson, F. Boyd, R. Richards, C. Just, H. Bland, W. Wallbauk, C. S. Carr .sur., J. Bony, J. Newtqp. and E., .Hay .(.sec: retary), Mr A. J. Ferguson was on duty.

CORRESPONDENCE,

Letters were received from Wilsons (N.Z,) Portland Cement Ltd., Y.M.C..V. National ■ Committee; Cinema' film firms; Northern. Athletic Union; Baud Committee and Library Committee. The committee commented favourably on the statement forwarded by the secretary of the Boys’ Band, and congratulated tho members of band on the progress made. The Library Committee was granted 10/ in £1 subsidy*, on September and October subscriptions.

.REPORTS. I The j treasurer reported credit, balances as follows; —Bank of N.Z. £122 ,19s 9d, Post Office Savings Bank £39 18s Id. The secretary’s report stated that receipts for October totalled £7B 12s Kid and the expenditure £53 ISs Bd.' The billiards and canteen receipts were better than previous mouth. Cinema taking were about the average and 31 new books had been added to the Library during October. The Billiards Committee reported that a snooker tournament was now in progress.

The Grounds Committee advised that the men’s bathing shed on the foreshore had been, repaired. Thu levels for proposed drainage on the sports ground had been taken, a- plan of drains being- before the mooting

for approval. The Band Committee reported that a sacred concert was to bo given, next Sunday, after church services and it had been decided to hold a bazaar in Februarv to raise funds.

Gymnasium. —The instructor ’reported that as the band practice night had been -altered to Friday, a number of older boys had expressed a desire to attend the classes. (This matter was left in the hands of the gymnasium instructor). The reports were adopted. GENERAL.

The tender of Mr C. Powell was accepted for digging drains, laying fascines and filling in oi same at the

sports ground. Accounts amounting to £67 6s lid were passed for payment.

LABOU'R DAY rO.MMTTTEK, A meeting o f ‘ tlx 1 rojivmitlcc* vtMS held in the Portland Hail on Tuesday night, Afr D. Forbes presiding. The secretary presented a statement of receipts and expenditure in connection with the recent function. Owing to the gathering being hold indoors, and the conseejnent curtailment of the sports programme, the expenditure was not so large.as allowed for. A donation of £o ?»s was made to the Portland Boys’ Band for its .services on Labntu Day. There is a good credit balance, which, with the books, will bo handed over when audited, to the company, to hold for text year’s fixture.

BILLIARDS AND SNOOKER. Tho billiards tournament which has

been in progress for some weeks concluded on October 31. Mr H. Gordon was the winner with 19 games, Mr L. Wilson being next with IS, followed by Messrs T. Hall 15, M. Korcwha and 11,I 1 , Griffiths 11, and C. Belson 10. A gold medal goes to the winner, and a silver medal with a gold centre, to the runner-up.

A. snooker tournament is now in progress with 1(5 competitors. The handicaps are as follows: Messrs P. Gaunt, owes 5; W. Wallbauk. scr; T. Hall, rec. 5; H. Gordon, rec. 12; W. Purchase, and M. Korewha, rec. 14; A. Belson, rec. 15; E. Thompson and C, Shipman, rec. 20; F. Allen and L. Chilman, rec. 25; H. Bland, E. Hay, P. Scelley, C. Belson, rec. 40; C. Carter, rec. 50. Two games are to be played in each match. Tho tournament is being run on the two-life system.
