NOTED CHIEF DEAD
INTERESTING CAREER ENDED, [Per Press Association.—Copyright.) WANGANUI, This Day. Eruini Te Irihau, an old Maori chieftain, and a noted figure in Wanganui during the Maori wars, was found dead in bed. He was on the Hauhau side, in the wars, and took part in the Battle oi Moutoa, where he was opposed to one who was his bosom friend, Apera Te Keunga. Eruini shot Apera in the foot, and to the end of his life Apera had to walk with the aid of a crutch.
Although once a rebel, Eruini! afterwards became a patriotic citizen. He took part in many public gatherings, and was presented to the Duke and Duchess of York. He was nearly 100 years of age.
