GENERAL

MONTHLY MEETING

The month Ivmeeting of the Hikurangi Town Board was held on. November 5, Cr. Nesbitt presiding over CTs. Hawkins, Hansell, Hamilton, Eickard and the Town Clerk, Mr O’Callaghan. SUBDIVISION APPROVAL. A reply was received from Steadman and . Steadman stating that the board wak quite within tbe law in approving the subdivision to the Wesleyan Church although there was no entrance from any street, owing to the church owning the adjoining lot, which had frontage to King Street.

It was resolved that the board approve the subdivision, and that the plan be signed and sealed and returned to Hunt and Alcock.

A further consignment,of books was received from Miss Moody, also a letter offering an enlarged photo of her late father.

t It was resolved that Miss Moody be thanked for her generosity, also to inform her that the board would much appreciate the photo promised. DUMP NUISANCE. It was resolved that the jHedica-1 Officer of Health be replied to stating that matters were being rectified at the sanitary dump and his request was being complied with. OVERFLOW NUISANCE.

A ratepayer complained of the overflow from the engine on Purdy’s Estate which was saturating and flooding proper!.' adjoining and creating a nuisance. I

It was resolvoQ that the Public Trustee be written to asking him to abate the nuisance. CONFERENCE REMITS. It was resolved that Crs Hawkins, Rickard and the clerk draft remits to the Municipal Conference' for consideration pertaining to water charges and transfer of property. CEMETERY SITE. A letter was received from Sir Edwin Mitchelson (chairman of the Hikurangi Coal Company) stating that his company had granted six acres of its land (being that portion inspected by members of the board and the Medical Offfccr of Health, in company with Mr Mackinson, situate on the main North Road), which he understood was acceptable to the board as a cemetery site in lieu of the present cemetery reserve. He asked that a resoiution of the board agreeing to accept the same be forwarded to Dr. Chosson, so that the making of an order-in-eouncil closing the present site be facilitated.

The chairman stated that several members of the board had viewed the position, which was in every way suitable.

On the motion of Crs Latham and Hamilton, it was resolved: “That in consideration of the Hikurangi Coal Coy., Ltd,, granting the board that, piece of land which has been inspected by members and the Medical Officer of Health, containing six acres, .situate on the main North Road, and which is in all respects suitable for a cemetery, the board recommend that the same bo accepted, and that the reservation of the present cemetery site be cancelled, and the land be reverted to quarry site; also that a copy of the resolution he forwarded to Dr. Chesson and the Hikurangi Coal Company.”

It was also resolved that a eom-j mittee of the board, consisting of Crsj Latham and Nesbitt, accompany Mrj Makinson and the surveyor to approve of the marking out of the site.

A letter was received from the secretary of the School Committee asking what further drainage was proposed to bo carried out by the Department. It was decided to write Mr Bosselmaim asking what further work is contemplated on the Mangawhero stream, also to acknowledge the letter from the School Committee.

A reply is to be sent to Mr Eush-j worth, M.P., in appreciation of his letter re assistance in general matters] pertaining to the town and district. It was resolved to call a meeting of the eoal mine owners carting coal over Valley Koad, as soon as convenient for Mr Barclay to be present, and if no agreement can be arrived at to take other measures to enforce payment for extraordinary traffic.

The .sanitary contractor (Mr 0. Covacieh) wrote asking ■ the board's permission to transfer the contract to his partner (Mr T. Cebalo). After

some discussion it was resolved that the transfer be not entertained, and that owing to the unsatisfactory manner in which the contract was carried out, Mr Covacich be called upon to terminate his contract, and that fresh tenders be called for same. It Was then, resolved that the matter of callings tenders be left in the hands of the sanitary committee, but that a meeting of the board be called to accept the tenders.

:It was resolved that a charge of.lo/ be made to tennis clubs for 'water. ; The > menrbers of the board are to accompany Mr Reyburn and view the position on the watershed area where ho is desirous of obtaining coal rights. The clerk was instructed to inform Mr J. Wilson that his coal-tip vyas not a sufficient distance in from the rftad for safety to traffic. It was resolved that Mr Quaife be requested to immediately remove material placed by him in the water-table, in front of his garage, otherwise the board will have same done at his expense. Owing to the possibility of the water scheme becoming inadequate to supply the needs of the town in the

near future, it was resolved that the Waterworks Committee get in touch \vith a competent engineer with a view to ranking a general report on the whole 'scheme.

The application of J. Roger to build a . dwelling at Waro was granted. Accounts totalling £435 4s 3d were passed for payment.
