The agreement by which the Lavvbeath is being worked refers to the crew of the steamer and provides that the men be paid New Zealand wages and work under New Zealand conditions until the steamer leaves Port Chalmers. It was pointed out here that the wider issue involved, that all ships carrying phosphates from Nauru to New Zealand shall pay New Zealand rates of wages, has not been agreed to. Probably it did not come within the scope of the committee.
