AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP.

TWO TIES RECORDED. (Australian Press Association.) (Received 9 a.m.) (ADELAIDE, August 20. The Australian golf championship commenced today at the * Seatown links in perfect weather. In the foursomes amateur championship Ivo Whitton and Leagh Winse.r tied with. P. Bulte and W. J. Fowler with scores of 104. Whitton. and Winner gave nothing away on, the greens all day, and played remarkably steady for 78—76. Nigel Smith and H. Morrison arid Sloan Morpeth and H. Hattersley also tied with 156. The holders of the foursomes title, Bettington and Hunter, are present to defend the title.'

In the professional event stroke play -of 36 holes, Rufus Stewart returned a splendid 72 for Ms .second round, finishing with a six-yard putt. His score was 146. Then came W. Bolger and F, Eyre .with 14,7, J. McIntosh 154 and A. J. .Shaw' 155.

In the interstate matches, Victoria beat Ncw r 'South Wales -by, four to three, and Victoria beat South Australia by five match os to two.

Horton’s piny in the Foursomes in partnership with Hattorsley was effective, but the young Sydney player also did well, though his iron shots were expensive. *.

Morpeth’s best was. a tee shot to the seventh hole of .161 yards which finished six inches from the pin. The pair’s cards .showed 78 out and in. Smith and Morrison’s scores were 80 and 76. The leading pairs are Whitton and Winsct" and Bulte and Fowler with 154 each.

The play off will take place during the week-end.
